The weather people told us it was going to snow Sunday night. For once, they were right! We have been iced in at my sweeties place since Sunday evening when the snow started falling like crazy. It snowed into the morning and the switched over to sleet/icy rain. So by Monday afternoon we had 5+ inches of snow plus about a 1/10 an inch of ice. There was lots of sledding, walks with the pups and enjoying the break from reality. 3 days later were all getting a bit of cabin fever and watching other people slide down the hill in front of the house (don’t worry, there have been no wrecks or injuries).

We southerners don’t do so well with snow and ice. Our response is pretty much to hole up and wait for it to thaw. So that’s exactly what we’ve done! We’ve been enjoying the puppy time and playing in the snow. (Although Puppy doesn’t do so well out in the snow for long periods of time, he starts shivering.)

So, in the sprite of the snowy weather (and getting warmed up) I thought it would be the perfect time to share this hot chocolate recipe. It makes a delicious beverage that will warm you right up! And the rum, chili powder, and orange zest work really well together.

Grow-Up Hot Chocolate (adapted from Chipotle)

1tsp orange zest

2 c soy milk

4 oz dark chocolate

1/2 c triple sec*

Dash chili powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg

Heat the milk and orange zest in a small sauce pan. Slowly add the chocolate, stirring until the chocolate melts. Bring to a simmer then remove from heat. Stir in the spices and triple sec.

Pour into cups and dust with nutmeg.

*Use whatever liqueur you prefer. Triple sec simply works well with the orange zest. You could ditch the orange zest and trade in a berry liqueur which would be equally tasty.
